How To: Tell If You Have a Balloon Frame House

With so much interest, Heather and Eric realized there was an opportunity to help other businesses successfully purchase and offer the Bubble House. The Bubble House is the newest party trend that creates a unique experience for any celebration. It's so versatile with its transparent dome that can be customized with up to three balloon colors to elevate any party theme. It’s perfect for indoor and outdoor events and great for adults and children. If you look around the edges of the 2nd story subfloor or attic subfloor in a balloon frame house, you’d be able drop a penny down to the basement in the stud bay.

We are not a franchise and are not able to offer exclusive rights to vendors at this time.

I’ve written about the differences between timber frame, balloon frame and platform frame houses in an earlier post you can read here, but I constantly get questions about how to tell if your house has balloon framing. Some issues with balloon framing, such as the lack of fire breaks between walls, make it suitable for one-story houses. That means it’s unsuited to multi-story buildings and should be relegated to mission-style and bungalow homes.

By incorporating complementary elements into your event design, you can create a cohesive and immersive experience that transports guests to a world of wonder.Start by selecting a color palette that complements the balloons. For example, if you’re hosting a fairy-themed birthday party, you could adorn tables with twinkling lights and sprinkle glitter on surfaces to create an ethereal atmosphere. Or if you’re hosting a corporate event with a futuristic theme, consider incorporating metallic accents and sleek furniture to complement the modern aesthetic of the balloon house. Finally, don’t forget about small details that can make a big impact. From customized invitations that set the stage for what’s to come to personalized party favors that guests can take home as mementos, every detail contributes to creating an unforgettable experience inside the balloon house. A balloon house is not just about the visual spectacle; it’s also about engaging activities and entertainment that bring the space to life.

They serve all of Los Angeles County and some areas of Orange County and San Bernardino County. By the 1930s, platform framing was seen as the solution to this fire safety issue, not to mention the fact that we were running out of extremely tall trees. It made more sense to build houses with shorter pieces of lumber since that was not only safer, but also cheaper. In the days of balloon framing, house fires were all too common and most houses didn’t survive long enough for the fire departments of the day to make much difference once they did get on site. Houses would burn down very fast and often didn’t allow enough warning for the people inside to escape to safety. In a balloon-framed house, there’s direct access from the attic subfloor or second floor down to the basement or stud bay.

The balloon house serves as a stunning backdrop for wedding portraits, capturing the magic of your special day in every frame. Imagine you and your partner surrounded by floating balloons, with love in the air and joy in your hearts – it’s a picture-perfect moment that will be cherished for years to come. When it comes to celebrating birthdays, there’s no better way to create magical memories than by hosting a party in a balloon house. This unique venue offers an immersive experience that will leave both children and adults alike feeling like they’ve stepped into a wonderland.Inside the balloon house, the possibilities for birthday bliss are endless. Children can bounce among the floating balloons, play interactive games, or even have their faces painted with whimsical designs. The transparent dome allows parents to keep an eye on their little ones while still being able to enjoy the enchanting atmosphere. For added excitement, consider hiring entertainers who specialize in balloon artistry or magic tricks.

The issue of not having fire breaks between floors obviously isn’t a big deal for one story houses like many Bungalows or Mission style homes, but for other multi-story houses, it’s important to know what you have. No, but it increases the length of time to get out of the house in case there is a fire. Just like smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, fire blocking is a good way to ensure your safety. Balloon framing was the most common form of construction in America from about the 1880s to the 1930s.

While I see how Lindsay wants that, I can’t ever imagine that’s what she’ll do. Lindsay is one of those women who quits her job to raise the kids but then can’t find a brand of organic apple sauce she likes so she invents her own, markets it, and then sells it to Nestle for $30 million in four years. Another technology emerging in the last part of the 19th century was nails, which initially were hand-forged and expensive to come by. In some cases, abandoned buildings had to be burned down so they could collect precious iron nails. • Western or platform framing gradually superceded combination framing following the 1920s. Our Bubble House is commercial grade, designed to sustain the wear and tear of events, and manufactured with the highest standards.

Balloon framing comprises a structure with material pieces nailed together, unlike in a platform frame where floors are framed independently. The technique utilizes vertical members or studs stretching the entire building’s height from the foundation to the rafter plate. Compared to beam and post construction, a balloon-framed house omits the heavy timber frame, using a third of the wood materials, so it’s erected faster. Using long lumbers and studs, it predominantly used 2×4 and 2×6 beam sizes long enough to build two or three stories high.

Before balloon framing became the go-to for building houses, carpenters and joiners had to be experts, especially if the rest of the house featured masonry or bricks. The main distinction between these styles is that balloon framing studs run from the foundation to the rafters, while independent studs signify the platform technique. Ligaments hold the structure together, and heavy columns and beams are replaced by continuous framing posts with intermediate horizontal elements.

Semi-balloon framing is a cross between platform and balloon framing, and it doesn’t have a continuous stud from floor to roof. It also requires hangers, unlike balloon frames, and floor joists hanging from double-top plates. • George Woodward, engineer, publishes in a farm journal, The Country Gentleman (Apr. 5, 1860), an isometric perspective view of the balloon frame, and is the first person to refer in print to both kinds of balloon frames. Material on the balloon frame was later published as a chapter in his book Woodward’s Country Homes (1865). Prefers the all-nail version over the Chicago type with its large sills framed into each other and finished with mortises for the studs and joists. Lyman Bridges, Building Materials and Ready Made Houses of 1870, advocated prefabricated houses generated off of pre-mortised sills (to house joists and studs) measuring 6 x 6 to 10 x 10.
